How long is the ICAO English language proficiency valid?
The recurrence of undertaking the ICAO English proficiency examination is determined by the level achieved:
- Level 4 – every 3 years
- Level 5 – every 6 years
- Level 6 – unlimited validity
What does the ICAO English language proficiency check consist of?
The proficiency check consists of 3 parts:
- Conversation and description (from aviation industry),
- Listening to aviation communication – pilot must be able to answer the examiner’s questions,
- Reading and understanding of an article from manual, aviation regulation or aviation publication.
- Duration of the check is approximately 30 minutes and the evaluation is done on the spot.

Instrument Rating – IR(A) Aviation English
Prior to the practical examination (Skill Test) for the Instrument Rating IR(A), you have to pass a theoretical examination in IR Aviation English (according to the FCL.055 Language proficiency). We also offer an IR English course to help you prepare for the exam.
What are the objectives of the Instrument Rating – IR(A) Aviation English course?
The goal is to improve the Aviation phraseology skills and gain necessary vocabulary for conducting the communication during the IFR flights. They will develop practical habits for using standard phraseology and the ability to understand broadcasts in the cockpit environment.
What does the Instrument Rating – IR(A) Aviation English course consist of?
The IR English course consists of:
- Grammar
- General English and communication
- Abbreviations, phraseology
- Devices and navigation
- Meteorology
- Descriptions (planning)
- Flight traffic control, manuals
- Final exam

The course price is 400 EUR.

Instrument Rating – IR(A) Aviation English proficiency check
Flying Academy has the CAA approval to provide IFR English Examination in accordance to FCL.055 (d)(e).
The unbeatable advantage of successful IFR English examination is its lifelong validity, compared to ICAO Examination and no level graduation (only pass/fail note). Once the examination is passed, the CAA will also remove the “English VFR Only” restriction from your license.
What does the Instrument Rating – IR(A) Aviation English proficiency check consist of?
The IR Aviation English proficiency check consists of two parts:
- the written part,
- oral part.
Both take place on the same day, one after the other. Written test takes 60 minutes and contains radiotelephony phraseology, acronyms, communication and general English knowledge test (reading and understanding). Students that pass the test with over 80% success rate, then proceed to the second part: the oral one, that takes approximately 30 minutes. During the exam, you discuss the results of the written test followed by an interview and simulation of IFR flight communication.
Upon the end of the exam, you will receive a certificate, based on which the CAA can add the qualification to your license.
