EASA Flight Instructor Courses
Pass your experience to the next generation of pilots. Earn your qualification to teach as a Flight Instructor (FI) or Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI).
Flight Instructor (FI)
The EASA FI(A) rating allows you to conduct ground and flight instruction for the issue of EASA PPL(A) and class and type ratings for SEP airplanes.
Until you have completed at least 100 hours of flight instruction and, in addition, has supervised at least 25 student solo flights, the privileges of the rating are restricted. The restrictions will be removed from the rating when the above requirements have been met and on the recommendation of the supervising EASA FI(A).
Pre-Entry Requirements
- At least 18 years of age
- Hold a CPL(A) OR PPL(A) with CPL theory passed
- 200 hours total flight time
- 150 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC)
- 30 hours on Single Engine Piston (SEP) aircraft (5 within last 6 months)
- 10 hours of instrument flight instruction
- 20 hours of VFR cross-country flight time as PIC
125 Hours Theory
The theoretical training is an integral part of FI(A) rating course. It can be done concurrently with the flight training or used as a separate ground training course. The theoretical training is divided into 3 stages and includes 125 hours.
30 Hours Practical
The practical training consists of at least 30 hours of flight instruction and is divided into 2 stages.
During your practical skill test you will be assessed on your ability to operate the aircraft from the right-hand seat and demonstrate your ability to conduct all maneuvers accurately and within limits.
Examination
To prove your practical skills, you will need to pass practical flight test with an approved examiner. You will need to prove your ability to:
- Operate the airplane within its limitations
- Complete course specific maneuver as smooth and as accurate as possible
- Exercise good judgment and airmanship
- Apply aeronautical knowledge
- Maintain control of the airplane at all times
Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI)
Many pilots wishing to enter professional aviation positions become Flight Instructors in order to gain the necessary experience. The Instrument Rating Instructor – EASA IRI(A) rating allows you to conduct flight instruction for the Instrument Rating – EASA IR(A) and class and type ratings for SEP airplanes.
Pre-Entry Requirements
- 18 Years Old: The pilot must be at least 18 years of age.
- Hold Class 1 Medical Certificate: You need to be physically fit for flying and instructing.
- 200 Hours IFR: The pilot must have at least 200 hours of flight time under IFR.
Theoretical Training
The IRI(A) training course includes:
- 25 hours: Teaching and Learning instruction (credited if you hold an FI certificate)
- 10 hours: Technical training, including revision of instrument theoretical knowledge, preparation of lesson plans and classroom instructional skills.
Practical Training
The Instrument Rating Instructor training comprises at least 10 hours of flight instruction on an airplane. In case you are an FI(A) holder, the number of hours is reduced to 5.
You will learn how to teach maneuvers to an instrument rating student and gain proficiency to train a student to the required level.
Examination
During your practical skill test you will be assessed on your ability to operate the aircraft from the right-hand seat and demonstrate your ability to conduct all maneuvers accurately and within limits and respect all regulations and limitation specific of IFR flights.
